Application Process
The US work permit application process varies depending on the type of work permit you are seeking. Here are the general steps to get an EAD.
Determine Eligibility
Make sure you are eligible for the specific work permit you are applying for. Each group has its own requirements and meeting these standards is essential to successful implementation.
Complete the Application Form
Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Include any required supporting documents such as ID, proof of eligibility and fees required.
Biometrics Appointment
In some cases, you may need to go to a biometric appointment to provide fingerprints and other identification information.
Wait for Processing
EAD processing time can vary, but usually takes several months. USCIS will notify you of the decision by mail.
Renewal
If your work permit has an expiration date, you must renew it before it expires. The renewal process is similar to the original application process.

Employment-Based Green Cards
Certain employment-based green card categories, such as EB-1 for priority workers and EB-2 for professionals with advanced degrees, also provide work authorization while the green card application is pending.
Understanding the Purpose of a Work Permit
In the USA, a work permit is officially known as an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). It is a crucial legal document that grants foreign nationals the right to work in the country for a specific employer and within defined periods. The purpose of the EAD is to regulate and control the entry of foreign workers into the US labor market, ensuring compliance with immigration laws and safeguarding the job opportunities for US citizens and lawful permanent residents.
Obtaining a work permit in the USA is a significant step towards achieving your professional goals and experiencing life in this diverse and dynamic country. Understanding the various types of work permits available and following the application process diligently will help you navigate the system effectively. Whether you are a skilled professional, a student seeking practical training, or an aspiring permanent resident, the USA’s work permit system offers a range of opportunities for talented individuals to contribute to its vibrant workforce.
